The Fleet's Cook
Autumn, 1882. The Margarita, out of Cádiz, sets sail for Havana with a manifest in good order and a handful of barrels that no one signed for. In the brig's galley, Saúl Carrasco —who was Salomé in the Sanlúcar register— serves stew to the captain, soup to the boatswain, and hardtack to the forecastle. Serving, Carrasco learns everything. The hard part is deciding whom to tell, and when to hold his tongue.
