The Espalier Cemetery

Summer of 1991, a manor house beside a dry rambla in Cieza. Hortensia is thirteen, with a notebook full of names no one will explain and a vine-covered courtyard the family calls, without ever laughing, the cemetery. When a tractor widening the track strikes something buried, the shaded family lunches start baring their teeth.
